Approaches & Treatment Methods
Hypnotherapy.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of deep relaxation. During hypnosis the conscious mind relaxes allowing the subconscious part of the mind to be accessed. The subconscious mind needs to be accessed, as this is the part of the mind that is in control of all our deep-seated emotions, experiences and memories.
Daydreaming is a form of hypnotic state, and if you were day dreaming or "staring into space" on the bus or train, and apparently oblivious to the chatting and noise around you, you would still smell smoke, hear an alarm or if someone called your name, you would be aware of this and respond accordingly.
Hypnosis is a very normal experience, which we all achieve to different levels on a daily basis, a state of hypnosis can be induced by many things such as the steady rocking of a bus or train, watching the patterns in a kaleidoscope, looking at the flickering flames of a fire, rhythmic drumming or any other rhythmic noise we tune into. In this state you are relaxed but always in control and aware of anything that may put you in danger or which needs your urgent attention.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses this state of hypnosis to help find relief from various problems and symptoms you may be experiencing. A hypnotherapist will use this state of hypnosis to reach the subconscious - the part of your mind that holds the continuing problems or symptoms that the conscious mind cannot access and change itself.
While in a state of hypnosis the hypnotherapist will make suggestions to the subconscious part of the mind to suppress the particular symptom or reframe the problem. Whilst this method is effective the symptom or problem can come back and so in my approach I also try to find the root cause of the problem or symptom, which will give more permanent relief, this is sometimes known as "curative" hypnotherapy.
Occupational Therapy Counselling ~
(some might also call this the original Life Coaching).
What is Occupational Therapy Counselling?
I believe that we are all our own best therapists to maintain peace of mind and balance in life, as well as sometimes our own worst enemies for allowing imbalance in mind, body, life and our environments.
I also believe that everyone has the capacity to bring about change in their situation but sometimes we need a bit of help or guidance to discover what we can and need to do in order to achieve this.
How can Occupational Therapy Counselling do this?
By using the various treatment approaches and skills I have previously described (see the
about me page), along with joint discussion, self-awareness exercises, and systematic problem solving. We therefore and together identify the problem or issues as experienced by you, explore the options and resources available to resolve the issues, formulate a plan of action and offer feedback and evaluation of that plan.
